Reach for Green..Green Works!
12 Jul
As we strive to live a more balanced, natural lifestyle and still keep a clean and healthy home, I started using Green Works cleaners from Clorox last week. I did not want any harsh chemical fumes or residues but I did want something that would clean. I bought the Natural glass and surface cleaner. In the past, most green cleaners either weren’t very green or weren’t very effective cleaners, or both. Green Works is a plant-based line of products. The products are 99 percent natural, sustainable, made from biodegradable ingredients and not tested on animals. I think this glass cleaner works as well as or better than conventional cleaners. I was impressed!

I would never have thought of putting Clorox and green in the same sentence but Green Works appears to me to deliver on both being environmentally friendly and a great cleaner. Green Works is derived from lemon, corn and coconut. I bought my cleaner at Home Depot. The bottle has the Home Depots ECO Option label which means it has less of an impact on the environment than competing products.

Clorox also makes Green Works natural all purpose cleaner. This product is dermatologist-tested and made with plant and mineral-based ingredients, it is suppose to cut through grease, grime and dirt. I will definitely buy that the next time I am in Home Depot. I also note they have a natural laundry detergent. If you are looking for cleaning products that also help create a greener Earth print, try out Green Works. Clorox says “They are committed to continuing to go further and push harder to develop natural cleaning products that help create a clean and healthy home.” I like the sound of that. Let me know what you think.

I enjoyed reading your blog on Green cleaning supplies. You are right, it really is nice to have a clean home that does not smell like a chemistry experiment.
You and Clorox should be applauded for your efforts.
I appreciate your website’s intelligent focus on simple things that we can do everyday that cumulatively make a difference.
Keep up the good work!!!
I appreciate what your writing, however I felt compelled to respond to Greenworks. Clorox claims that each one of the five cleaners is at least 99% natural — that’s right, the unregulated “n” word — a fact which can be verified with a glance at the ingredients. Here’s the list for the all-purpose cleaner: water, alkyl polyglucoside, ethanol SDA-3C, glycerine, lemon essential oil, preservative (Kathon) and colorant (Milliken Liquitint Blue HP dye and Bright Yellow dye X); the last two – preservative & colorant– make up the circa 1% of the non-”natural” petroleum-derived portion of the cleaners (though Clorox says Kathon will biodegrade within 28 days). With a few exceptions, like the addition of sodium lauryl sulfate and lauramine oxide, the ingredients for the rest of the cleaners are mostly similar.
You can read more on my blog under “Misleading Green Marketing Tactics….Grrr” the link is http://www.spellsgogreen.wordpress.com. Yes, I do mention the products we represent Zoe Clean and the reason is they ARE Environmentally Safe. They were able to pass the strict guidelines and regulations to bare the EPA & DFE Logo for Environmental Safety – something these other companies CAN’T do.
Hi Spells, thanks for your comment, those are some interesting points you have made. We have been using the Greenworks products for a while now and we love how they clean and hope they are a greener choice than other brands, we will certainly take a look at your site and products. Thanks for your interest in our site.

Hello. I hope I didn’t sound to negative, as that wasn’t my intention at all. I just feel it is so wrong that the ‘big companies’ are trying to profit from consumers by advertising tactics and making them believe their products are environmentally friendly, all natural. Environmentally-Friendly merely means they reduced some of their chemicals, but were not safe enough because of chemicals, to pass the EPA standards. Products that are All Natural, doesn’t not mean chemically free. I just want consumer to read their labels, and that is were the truth will be. They have become quite clever in the labeling words too, however you can usually figure it out. I personally trust labels that have just a few ingredients and words I know, like Baking Soda, Essential Oils, etc..
Also, this does apply to foods too! All Natural doesn’t always mean ’safe’. The best way to go is Organic, but even then – read the label.
Blessings and you do have a wonderful website!
Hello to the Spells family, we love your site… You didn’t sound too negative at all and infact we really appreciate the feedback. I will certainly be paying closer attention to ingredients and whether something is truly “All Natural” from now on. You clearly have done some great research and we would love to hear your thoughts on other subjects… Thanks from the Our Everyday Earth bloggers
