Our Mini Ecosystem

Koi in our pondWhen we moved into our home, one of the first things on our list was to put in a Koi pond. We had one in our previous home, and believe it are not we actually reused the rocks from that pond to create this one. We utilize a biofall and skimmer system. We add liquid bacteria once a week in the spring, then about once every two to three weeks in the summer. This keeps the pond clear. We have plants that grow in the biofalls, water lilys in the deep part and other plants that are in the marginal areas of the pond, which also keep it clear and take up toxins produced by the fish.

Behind the pond
There is a lot of interaction and intermingling going on in this mini ecosystem. The Koi scavenge, the mosquito eaters, well they eat mosquito larva, a few frogs who serenade us at night and eat bugs, ever once in a while a water snake which keep down the frog population, and the plants that balance things out.

We truly enjoy our evenings on the patio, the water falling creates a peaceful environment, allowing us to relax and enjoy being alive.
