The holidays have been and gone and you’ve probably acquired some new super cool electronic gadgets, but this often means that the older not so cool gadgets are ready to be trashed, they have just become your e-waste…

Piles of E-Waste!

So called “e-waste” makes up an increasing segment of what Americans throw away, which means that disposing of our used up electronics properly is becoming increasingly important. Many electronics contain dangerous chemicals, including lead and mercury. While they appear in low quantities, and are generally safe to have around the house, these chemicals can leak out over time and require proper disposal. Unfortunately, it is much cheaper and easier to simply toss these electronics into the trash, where they can end up in landfills or burned, releasing the toxins into the air or groundwater.

The first step in the proper disposal of electronics should be to evaluate whether or not the device is still useful. If it is in working order and simply outdated, you may be able to donate it. Many wireless stores have old-phone drop-off points where you can donate your old cell, the organization that I’ve seen is almost always trying to help women in abusive situations. Remember to always delete your personal information before donating any electronic device. Computers are often needed for various programs and institutions; anything that is capable of basic functionality such as word processing may be needed.

If your electronics are dead, or beyond reasonable repair, you should find a place to recycle. There are a number of organizations that specialize in helping consumers make green decisions. Often times they will have a link to a local recycler, who will help you dispose of your electronics properly. Earth911 is a great website, which allows you to search for recycling centers in your area. Many times it will lead you to a manufacturer or retailer website. Often, manufacturers and retailers have recycling programs for spent electronics, and may even offer a discount on a new purchase when you choose to recycle.

Earth 911 Can Help You Find an E-Waste Recycler

Whichever route you choose, please be sure to take care of your worn out gadgets properly. So many people would love to have a basic computer, even if you think yours is too out of date. The chemicals released by aging electronics can endanger everyone in your community. If we can all do our part to dispose properly, we can make our world a little bit greener.
