The Yogurt Patch – A Tasty & Green Local Business!

yogurt_patch_fresh_yogurtWe were recently invited by my wife’s parents, Sharen and Carter, to get fresh frozen yogurt from a local business they had been telling us about for weeks. We tagged along in hope of some delicious dessert and found much, much more! The “Yogurt Patch” sells a variety of low-fat, no-fat and no sugar added fresh frozen yogurt and it’s all delicious but what really impressed my wife and I was that the Yogurt Patch has made an obvious investment in being a green business.  It’s not immediately obvious but eco friendly products are used all throughout the store.

The eagle eyed yogurt buyers will notice a sticker on the door which shows that the business is supported by a local “Green Teens” organization proving that the local community has already recognized the green commitment being made.

The Yogurt Patch owners have truly invested in green options throughout the store, we wish more businesses would make such a green commitment and we’d like to share the experience with you, so here we go…

yogurt_patch_recycled_cupsThe first eco friendly sign is when you pick up a yogurt cup, all of the cups in the store are made from recycled cardboard and are lined with a plant based plastic which is derived from domestic plants instead of oil. The best thing is that all of the cups are biodegradable and will become usable compost in as little as 45 days if processed by a commercial compost facility!

With cup in hand your next task is to choose from one of the many flavors of frozen yogurt available, I always go for the “Cafe Latte” or “Cookies and Cream” flavors, Katie loves the “Cake Batter” flavor. Our entire family eats at the Yogurt Patch and we each stake claim to our own favorites!

The next stage of this delicious experience is to sprinkle some of the many toppings available. The “Martin” special involves adding crumbled Oreo’s, Graham Cracker sprinkles and optional gummy bears on top!

You might think this is where the green experience ends but there are yet more refreshingly eco friendly treats, as you check out a spoon is added to your yogurt and upon closer inspection you will find that the spoons are all made from renewable plant starch materials. If that wasn’t enough, all of the stores napkins and paper towels are made from post-consumer recycled fiber.

After our wonderfully green yogurt we stayed for a while and talked with the owners who were happy to share their other green secrets. The staff areas in the back of the store have all motion based lights which switch off automatically to save energy. The store also made an investment in the community by placing a large recycling container behind the store. Local apartment owners are openly invited to place their recyclables in the container which is collected each week.

The Yogurt Patch is located in The Venue at Hometown near the Firehouse Subs, Chapps Cafe and Chipotle Mexican Grill in North Richland Hills, Texas.

  1. Thanks for the good review! You spent some time writing this and we appreciate it.

Just to clarify: The motion control lights are only in the rest rooms. We’re required to have “normal” switches in prep and dining areas.

The recycling bin appeared after we kept asking how to get one. The Green Teens gave us contact info and we kept making calls. After finding out there were no bins close by we tried to find out how to get one.

Before we could get an exact answer, the waste management company brought the bin. I’m not sure if the Venue management took care of it or if they decided on their own–we’re just glad we don’t have to bring all the recycling materials home!

    Thanks again!
